Become a Canadian Certified Inclusion Professional

Expert Panelist, Cathy Gallagher-Louisy, and the CCIP Team at the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion (CCDI) are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the first exam, on November 21st, to become a Canadian Certified Inclusion Professional (CCIPTM). CCDI has for many years incorporated the GDIB into its assessment tools, programs, events, and publications, and was the Canadian partner for 2016 GDIB launch events.

After a long consultation involving more than 200 diversity and inclusion practitioners across Canada, CCDI has created a rigorous certification process to assess practitioners’ experience, skills and knowledge, with a particular focus on the Canadian context and legislation. As a diversity and inclusion practitioner, this exciting opportunity offers formal recognition of your experience and will boost your career. To be eligible to enter the certification process, you must have at least three years of relevant diversity and inclusion work experience and at least two references who can attest to this work.

To become certified, first you will write a multiple-choice exam, which can be taken remotely. Then you will prepare and submit a Professional Experience Dossier. Once you’ve successfully completed these two steps, you will become a Canadian Certified Inclusion Professional: your name will be added to an online registry of CCIPs on the CCDI website and you will be able to add CCIP to your signature! If you sign up as part of the first group, you will enjoy unique advantages.

Image of Greg JenkinsIt was just a little over a month ago when we invited Expert Panelists, friends and select users of the GDIB to help us with the task of creating a tagline for The Centre. We went on to receive a total of 61 entries from 17 different participants within the course of a week.

On July 25, Greg Jenkins of Greg Jenkins Consulting entered a total of 18 submissions for our new tagline contest, and while there were more than a few strong contenders, one stood out above all the rest. “Research, Educate, Shift” was the original entry. It was number 16 on the list and it resonated most with the deciding members of The Centre Circle.

One of its strongest selling points was its call to research and education—the core of our mission. In addition to its spot on messaging was its simplicity. In just three words, we had a succinct (all-be-it, general) list of steps to our process, a mantra to repeat to get us through the day and honestly, just a good way to approach a number of life’s challenges in general.

Greg describes himself as a “Service Disabled Veteran who loves serving as a dedicated and passionate diversity & inclusion (D&I) consultant, trainer, facilitator and mentor. I’m a life-long learner of diversity, inclusion, leadership and culture, and I care about helping people and organizations learn and grow in order to become higher performing. I love what I do!” When we contacted Greg about his winning entry, he had this to say:

“Julie & Alan, I thank you, and the wonderful [expert panelists] who’s vision, hard work and insights I’ve admired for many years.  It’s an honor to be included in such impressive company.  I look forward to [the] next steps and am glad we have a new tagline.  Onward and upward!”

We here at The Centre would like to thank all of you who contributed tagline suggestions—we had a hard time deciding but it was fun sorting through the choices and further solidifying the core values of The Centre brand.

GDIB Seattle – It’s Hot!

In May 2017, Seattle was listed as the fastest growing big city in the United States and on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, it will act as the host city of the next GDIB Launch Event. Some of the country’s top Fortune 500 companies are located in and around Seattle and the GDIB has aligned with some of the biggest. Google, has signed up as the Platinum and Venue Sponsor. That means tapping into the hot Seattle economy and the hot diversity & inclusion issues. Also topping the list of incredible sponsors is Outreach, a sales engagement software company, and Boeing Employees Credit Union.

The Seattle Launch Event will introduce the Global Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarks which helps organizations determine strategy and measure progress in managing diversity and fostering inclusion. Using breakout sessions that embrace a variety of GDIB topics, attendees will sample the standards and how they can be applied. This is not a workshop. It is an introduction celebrating the GDIB and its possibilities. Captains facilitating were chosen for their experience and expertise with Diversity & Inclusion in organizations and the applications to the GDIB. There will be food, drink, networking and raffle prizes. Seating is available for 200 guests and as with past GDIB Launches, this event is free but registration is required so, you’ll want to register early!

The evening’s line-up is as follows:

5:30 – 6:00 pm: Networking, eating, making merry (food is an important part of Google’s culture, we understand)

6:00 – 7:00 pm: High-speed kick-off followed by exciting guests, a GDIB overview, and a panel of GDIB users and representatives from various sectors

7:00 – 8:00 pm: 12 to 15 Breakout Sessions with Captains to share their stories of D&I work in their organizations, how it connects with the GDIB, and lots of dialogue

8:00 – 9:00 pm: So what? Attendees will have the opportunity to share what they’ve learned and what they’ll take back to their organizations, ask questions, and explore what’s next!

For nearly 30 years, The Forum on Workplace Inclusion has built a thriving community of cross-sector leaders who gather each year to learn and grow through facilitated dialogue, structured networking and experiential learning.

Evolution of the GDIB

The Global Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarks: Standards for Organizations Around the World (GDIB) and all related tools and materials are now part of The Centre for Global Inclusion along with many other services – and more to come.

The past couple of years have seen a tremendous increase in activity and interest in the GDIB. While this is all good, providing something for free comes at a significant cost both financially and in time and resources.  Our 501c3 US tax status will provide the structure to raise funds from multiple sources.  Keeping the GDIB free is a promise we have kept since it was first published by us in 2006.  We intend to keep that promise. All our resources are provided for free.  We are not a consulting firm or a referral agency, but users are invited to contact any of our Expert Panelists, our Alliances, our Sponsors, our Board or Council members or users directly for consulting assistance.  Some, but not all, may be available to assist you.  If you have questions about the use of the GDIB or any other matter, please feel free to ask and we will endeavor to help you.

The Birth of the GDIB

A Systemic Understanding of the D&I Field in Practice

Wishing to help organizations improve the quality of D&I work globally, Julie O’Mara and Alan Richter originally built upon a unique set of benchmarks created by The Tennessee Valley Authority in the early 1990s, called Bench Marks for Diversity. This original work, done by a research team at the TVA, was limited by being US-focused and, after the team disbanded, was in great need of updating with the passing of time and the maturation of the D&I field. Around 2004, with the TVA’s blessing, O’Mara and Richter set out to update those standards, make them global in scope, and applicable across all kinds of organizations, and keep the document free to use, as was the case with the original benchmarks.

That document was updated and revised by the GDIB authors and sent to the Expert Panelists asking for comments and suggestions. Those were compiled by the authors and then sent again to the Expert Panelists so they could review and comment on the edits made by the other Expert Panelists. The authors finalized the work, making judgments on what to accept and what not to accept, although most suggestions were accepted unless there was a conflict.  For 2011 the Expert Panelist group was expanded, with some original members leaving and new ones joining. The research review process began with the 2006 version and a process similar to the one used to create the 2006 version was conducted.

In 2013, The Diversity Collegium, a think tank of practitioners, scholars, and thought leaders, became the primary sponsor and home of the GDIB. Go to www.diversitycollegium.org to learn about The Collegium.

We created a 2014 edition to include the sponsorship and improved the look and feel of the 2011 GDIB as well as improvements to the introductory material. No substantial changes that required research by the Expert Panelists were made.

For the 2016 Tenth Anniversary edition, we continued the research process as described for the 2011 edition. The number of Expert Panelists engaged grew to 95, including many who worked on the earlier editions. See the section on Expert Panelists for a list of all who worked on the 2016 edition. In addition to updating the benchmarks themselves to reflect current practices, we changed the conceptual frameworks to approaches for D&I to reflect the way D&I work is currently practiced, added a new category on Connecting D&I and Sustainability, added a description of the Ultimate Goals of D&I, added an explanation of practicing D&I work as a systems approach, and revised the model.

Since 2013, The Collegium has committed time, energy, and resources to enable the GDIB to continue its successful growth. We are so appreciative of The Collegium’s commitment to the GDIB and being our “home” from 2013 to July, 2017.

The Future of the GDIB

The users of the GDIB have grown over the past decade, covering a wide array of sectors – including corporate across many industries, education, health, government, international public sector and non-profit organizations. Additionally other supporters and funders have emerged to sustain the GDIB operations, and now in 2017, the time has come to provide a long-term sustainable home for the GDIB.

In July 2017, The Centre for Global Inclusion was formed and created the 2017 edition of the GDIB. Although numerous references to the website and other improvements were made, no substantial research-based changes were made. Go here to download the current 2017 Edition of the GDIB.
