A THANK YOU TO SESAME STREET --
A GLOBAL CONTRIBUTOR TO
DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION
Editorial by: Shawndra Cox-Diaz,
Creative Director, The Centre for Global Inclusion
This year, we celebrate 50 years of Sesame Street! That’s five decades of helping kids (and adults) everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder—one-half century of broadcasting positive messages about autism, gender equity, health and hygiene, and financial empowerment. Sesame Street’s global impact has been felt by children in more than 150 countries and translated into 60 languages. From the early days of Kermit’s  It’s Not Easy Being Green  to the more recent additions of  Julia , the four year old muppet with autism, and  Raya and Zari  who are teaching an entire generation of girls and boys about hygiene and seeing each other as equals, Sesame Street’s message of diversity, equity, and Inclusion has been an ever present and strong one that we at The Centre will always be grateful for.

We have compiled a list of some of our favorite Sesame Street clips and shared them with you. Just click READ MORE for the links. We hope you enjoy. Let us know your favorites as well!

STORIES OF D&I BEST PRACTICES
DEVELOPING A DEI VISION AND STRATEGY
The Portland Trail Blazers’ approach to
Operationalizing the Global Diversity and Inclusion Benchmarks,
Category 1: D&I VISION, STRATEGY, AND BUSINESS CASE.
Part one of a seven-part series.
Article by: Octavia Chambers,
Diversity Equity & Inclusion Manager, Portland Trail Blazers
Editor’s note: Go here  to read about the NBA’s development of its Playbook on D&I. Using the GDIB as a base, Melissa Palarea, Associate Director of D&I at the NBA describes what they offered to each of the 30 North American men’s basketball teams. This 7-part series describes how the Portland Trail Blazers implemented the program.
Galvanized by the approach to diversity and inclusion by the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Portland Trail Blazers made a formal commitment in 2016 to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within their organization and community. “Historically the work led by the Social Responsibility team focused on advancing equity across the region. However, the strategic work being implemented by the league reminded us that we have a responsibility to utilize our platform and resources to be more intentional about our commitment to advancing DEI internally and externally,” said President & CEO, Chris McGowan.
In September of 2017, the Portland Trail Blazers adapted the NBA’s D&I Playbook, which is based in part on the Global Diversity and Inclusion Benchmarks, to create a systems-level plan to address disparities experienced by their staff and community. The plan focuses on 7 areas: vision, measurement and accountability, inclusive culture, talent management, brand, service and sales, social responsibility, and supplier diversity. The application of a collective impact framework led to the creation of seven cross-departmental strategic planning committees made up of 40+ total staff at all levels of the organization.  Each committee is led by at least one executive leader. These committees along with the company's equity team worked together to develop a holistic approach and strategy to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion internally and externally. “The strategic planning committees provide a space for staff of all levels to learn about and implement additional ways to advance DEI within their sphere of influence. Our goal is for all staff across the company to see themselves as champions and leaders of the work,” stated Christa Stout, Vice President of Social Responsibility.

AN OPPORTUNITY – CULTURAL DETECTIVE® TOOL IS SEEKING A NEW OPERATING PARTNER
Expert Panelist Dianne Hofner Saphiere is seeking a new operating partner for the Cultural Detective® subscription service for intercultural/DEI competence development. This renowned and proven method has outgrown its founder and is ready for exponential growth. It is profitable and turnkey, with team and processes in place.

The Cultural Detective method came into being in 1989. In 2001 Shell Oil declared it the most popular element of their international DEI efforts and requested we develop a package for every country in which they do business. Microsoft attributed a 30% increase in customer satisfaction to Cultural Detective. Dozens of customers report increased consulting, training and coaching revenue (increased repeat business) due to their client’s use of Cultural Detective.
WHY AND HOW SOCIAL MEDIA HELPS
GET OUR DEI MESSAGE OUT
By Greg Jenkins, Founder & CEO, Greg Jenkins Consulting and The Centre’s Social Media Advisor. Greg is also active with one of our Alliances – IAC – The Inclusion Allies Coalition .
Editor’s Note: The Centre has just contracted with Greg Jenkins to develop a social media strategy that will involve using social media to meet The Centre’s Mission. You will hear more about this. Please help us meet The Centre’s mission by liking and posting on our various sites (see our social media links at the beginning of this newsletter). Your ideas and involvement are much appreciated.  Re-posting informative messages of substance that will help all of us meet DEI goals is important for us to do.
We all often talk about how important social media is when used properly. Here are some results, tips, and encouragement to “get busy” posting and sharing. It’s a relatively easy way to educate others about diversity, equity, and inclusion.

INCLUSION ALLIES COALITION RUNS
WHITE FRAGILITY II WEBINAR
-July 24, 2019-
As a response to member requests after the May Webinar, the IAC is continuing its dialogue on White Fragility with White Fragility II: Unmasking the Racial Worldview. For those who could not access the May webinar because it was oversubscribed, you can find the recording on the IAC website under IAC Webinars: http://www.inclusioncoalition.info/iac-webinars.html

The flyer states: "The July 24th for White Fragility II, as we deconstruct the shield of whiteness that protects white identity, showing up as fragility yet enforcing social structures of dominance and cultural oppression for non-whites. Our May Webinar exploring white fragility made it clear that continuing to interrogate white identity is important to removing structural racism and unmasking the racial world view hidden by the fragility narrative. In our July Webinar, we explore what is in it for whites to address racism, white culture, the embeddedness of the ideology of white supremacy and the utility of cultural humility as a bridge to antiracism. We will also discuss the work that is needed for white people to own their whiteness, move from fragility, feeling attacked, shame and blame to owning their identity, addressing racism, and becoming allies who use their white privilege as a catalyst for social change."

Panelists include:
Judith H. Katz Ph.D , Owner, Executive VP, Kaleel Jamison Consulting Group
Beth Applegate , Owner, Applegate Consulting Group
Kathie Gillet Ph.D. , Kathie Gillet Consulting, A Visionary Experience
Natasha Aruliah , Facilitator, Consultant, Speaker and Coach
