MILITARY DEPARTMENTS
USE GDIB AS A ROADMAP
Article by A. Renée Yuengling, Ph.D.
Expert Panelist
Special note from the editors: We encourage you to read this article as it gives a prospective of the universal use of the GDIB in various sectors.  This military use is transferable to other sectors.
Based on her primary research on evidence-based competencies for leading diverse teams, Expert Panelist Dr. Renée Yuengling consults with the US military and intelligence communities as well as several foreign militaries. The  Global Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarks  (GDIB) has proven to be effective and adaptable for these organizations, living up to its promise of being for “all sectors, sizes, and types of organizations around the world.” Despite the significant differences between profit-driven corporations and mission-driven military organizations, the GDIB proved readily adaptable in her recent work with both the US Navy (635K members), and the Department of the Army (1.3 million members).
STORIES OF D & I BEST PRACTICES
ACTIONS TO HELP ACHIEVE THIS GLOBAL D & I BENCHMARK
LEADERS  MUST  DO
CERTAIN THINGS PERSONALLY
Article by Dr. Robert Hayles
Expert Panelist and Effectiveness/Diversity & Inclusion Consultant
Based on studying the “best places to work” literature, consultation with colleagues, and my own experience with over 150 clients, I believe that organizations do not become and remain best places to work (in general and for specific identity groups) unless their leaders are personally engaged. Such organizations are more likely to outperform peer organizations. This article describes what that looks like in association with the GDIB category, Leadership and Accountability.
FLEXIBILITY PROVES GOOD FOR EMPLOYEES, EMPLOYERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT –
And it Embraces the Future!
Article by Catherine Gordon,
HR Director and GDIB User at the David Suzuki Foundation,
Vancouver, BC, Canada
When the David Suzuki Foundation, an environmental non-profit was founded in 1991, its founders ensured that their values of community and sustainability were reflected in their inclusive people practices. This means that although DSF is one of the busiest organizations I have ever worked for it has always had a four-day work week for  every  member of staff since it opened in Vancouver. Our staff have the choice of two schedules – Monday – Thursday or Tuesday – Friday, so we are actually open and working five days a week to support external partners and respond to unexpected media worthy events relevant to our work. When you are fighting for the right to a healthy environment for all Canadians, against climate change, to protect endangered species, promote biodiversity and to work with Indigenous communities to preserve nature you also need to have time to refresh your mind and spirit and remind yourself what you are working for. A four-day work week means you have more time to spend in nature, to enjoy the seasons and reduce your commute to also preserve the environment.

These are exciting and challenging times for change agents. While gains have been made, many organizations have not yet realized the promise of more inclusive workplaces that leverage diversity. At the same time, the world outside of work seems more divided than ever over issues of difference: race, gender, sexual orientation, sexual identity, immigration, and much more. How do change agents and those responsible for I&D efforts enhance their skills so that they can navigate these times and accelerate change? How do we shift and speed up the landscape of change?

Join Placida Gallegos, Judith Katz and Fred Miller for a deep dive into the mindsets, behaviors, and strategies that will enhance your skills for building more inclusive, collaborative workplaces that leverage diversity and fuel your ability to grow yourself as an agent of change.
