GDIB EXPERT PANELIST, SID REEL
CHANGE AGENT FOR UC BERKELEY
|
|

|
|
GDIB Expert Panelist, Dr. Sidalia (Sid) G. Reel, joined the UC Berkeley Equity & Inclusion Division in 2008 as the first incumbent in the Director of
Staff Diversity Initiatives
role. Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor for Equity & Inclusion, Sid's list of efforts include (but are not limited to): engaging staff and management in increasing staff diversity at all levels of employment; developing and launching a leadership development program for staff of color; and linking staff diversity efforts to the public mission of the university as part of the Strategic Plan for Equity, Inclusion and Diversity
.
For Black History Month, Berkeley News spent each week sitting and speaking with a different African American leader on campus. In a four minute podcast, hostess Anne Brice focused on Sid's past nine years of "helping [UC Berkeley] staff feel valued and appreciated for the essential work they do on campus." The interview draws the connection between Sid's youth, growing up in a household with four younger siblings, to now being in control of making "nine thousand staff feel like a valued part of campus."
Since joining UC Berkeley, Sid has remained the only person whose job it is to be focused solely on staff diversity. "I think one of the mainstays of diversity and inclusion work is for everybody to recognize all the uniqueness that you bring in a variety of ways.” Listen and read more below.

SUMMER INSTITUTE for INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION CONFERENCE
|
|
If your life's work includes "building bridges among cultural differences, softening cultural barriers to living life with others, and probing the mysteries of unknown places and peoples," the
Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication (SIIC)
is for you. GDIB Expert Panelist, Janet Bennett, Ph.D., has been the driving force behind SIIC.
The Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication has a 40-year history of providing professional development for people who believe that this work matters. During its first ten years at Stanford University, and for the last 30 under the auspices of the Intercultural Communication Institute (ICI) in Portland, Oregon, SIIC has become a creative - and sometimes downright playful - community of intercultural scholars and practitioners from many cultures that meets each year to renew their energies and commitments.

MANAGING THE TENSIONS OF INCLUSION
What does it mean to be inclusive, when there are currently so many forces pulling in multiple directions?
While we may want to foster acceptance of a broader range of styles and identities, we also work to set limits on what is acceptable so we can eliminate discrimination.
Join Inclusion Allies on
March 28thth at 4:30pm EST/1:30pm PST
GDIB Expert Panelists, Bernardo M. Ferdman and Ilene Wasserman will facilitate a dialogue exploring some of the paradoxes and dilemmas we face as we embrace and create truly inclusive workplaces.
